Well it's all been pretty exciting with the final of the 3MT competition at ANU, and I will get some more pictures and, hopefully, a video link up when they become available. But before the Australia/New Zealand final in a few weeks there is something else even more awesome happening! That's right! STARFEST!
StarFest is a part of the Festival of the Stars run by Siding Spring Observatory over in Coonabarabran. And it is happening THIS WEEKEND! It's a 1-2 day event starting on the 5th of October with Science in the Pub!
From previous years I have been told this an awesome night. This year the topic of discussion is "The pub at the end of the universe!" The science panel includes Prof. Brian Schmidt, Prof. Ken Freeman, and Prof. Matthew Colless with Prof. Fred Watson as MC for the night. If you are around in Coona this weekend why not come down? Here's a link to more info: Science in the pub.
Saturday is the SSO Open Day! A day when everyone can go past those 'Authorised personnel only' signs and get a tour of the many telescopes up at the observatory. Along with being able to check out some of these telescopes, and ask questions, there are talks going on throughout the day by astronomers such as Ken Freeman, Matthew Colless, Charley Lineweaver, Helmut Jerjen, and Remo Collet. There's even a sausage sizzle for when all the science makes you hungry! So if you have ever wanted to get up close and personal with some of Australia's leading optical telescopes why not come up? I'll be helping out at the open day, so you might just see me wandering around helping out with the BBQ, answering people's questions, or showing people one of the telescopes!
Not only are there talks throughout the day but at the end of the day Prof. Brian Schmidt (yes, the nobel laureate) will be giving the Bok Lecture on the floor of the AAT (Anglo Australian Telescope) on "Observing the Universe from Australia".
And if that isn't enough excitement for one weekend this years StarFest is toping off the day with a Star Party! A chance to come out at night and look at the pristine skies above Coonabarabran with sky tours and lectures and an atmosphere of discovery and wonder with people just as amazed by the sky as you!
Why not come round to Coonabarabran this weekend? It's a long trip but the day will be full of fun, discovery, and science! What more could you ask for! For all the information about this coming weekend just head on over to the StarFest website!
